We made a magazine
A real one, out of paper and ink!

We launched this website back in 2021. Not long ago, geologically speaking, but an eternity in internet terms. We’ve published over seventy articles since then, covering everything from the rise of QAnon to the advent of AI and the tumultuous state of publishing—all through the lens of story.
We’ve had fun! But the internet, it’s a busy place. And the more time we’ve spent on it, the more we’ve felt the urge to log off. To slow down. To reject modernity and embrace tradition. To make something you can hold in your hands—something that doesn’t need WiFi and has the comments firmly switched off.
In other words, we’ve felt the urge to make a good old-fashioned print magazine. So earlier this year, that’s exactly what we decided to do. We could have taken the website to a printer and said 'just bind this up and call it a day'. But if we were going to commit The Story to paper, we wanted to make it a little stranger, a little more obsessive, a little more unhinged—freed from whatever editorial restraint we'd shown online.
Ten months later, it’s finally here: a 172-page print magazine about storytelling. We call it The Story: The Magazine. And you can order a copy right now at our online store.
Inside you'll find writers from The New Yorker, McSweeney's, The Onion, The Paris Review, as well as heaps of lesser-known but equally cool places, all helping us map out the beautiful, chaotic, and occasionally unhinged landscape of creative life. There are stories about the godfather of punk publishing, a crew of Marxist video game artists, and all manner of obsessives who've dedicated their lives to making things up for a living.
It's weird, it's sprawling, and it occasionally gets unhinged—exactly as promised. Come and get it.
Australian readers: You can order your copy at our online store. We’ll update this page with bricks and mortar stockists shortly.
International fam: The Story should hit stores in the US and Europe early 2026. We’ll update you with a list of stockists shortly.
The Story is published by Fireside Agency, a comms collective passionate about storytelling.
